The basic final grade formula compares your current grade, your desired grade, and the weight of the final exam. A common formula is: required final score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. Use the final weight as a decimal, so 20% becomes 0.20.

Suppose your current grade is 86%, your target grade is 90%, and the final exam is worth 25% of the class grade. The required final score is (90 − 86 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 102%. In that situation, a 90% course grade may not be possible without extra credit, a curve, or changed weights.
