Fuel Cost Formula
The basic fuel cost formula is simple: trip miles ÷ miles per gallon × price per gallon. The accuracy depends on using a realistic MPG and a current fuel price. Highway driving, city traffic, hills, wind, speed, tire pressure, and cargo weight can all change actual fuel use.
- Gallons needed = miles ÷ MPG
- Fuel cost = gallons needed × price per gallon
